Summer, for many, conjure visions of lazy days in the beach in a hammock while sipping a refreshing tall glass of drink. But, for some, summer is the time to look for enriching and rewarding short-term jobs. Teens and college students on school break top the list of summer job hunters. The adults who are on contractual jobs or those who lost their jobs recently may also line up for that summer job opening.
1. Connections – Finding that exciting job will be a breeze if one gets to know the community and culture where one aims to work. The summer apprenticeship programs will vary from town to town, from city to city or from one company to another. Try to match one’s own set of unique skills and experiences with the company’s needs and goals. So read and research about the companies or organizations one wishes to join before sending in applications. Get advice from people who work at the company or who have interned before in that company. Some colleges and institutions work with industries and businesses for a more focused and mutually beneficial internship programs. Connect with teachers, advisers and guidance counselors to take advantage of these programs.
2. Goals – Be clear with your goals, intentions and passions before setting out to go job hunting. Why spend the summer working? Is it just to please one’s parents? Is it in line with long-term goals of chosen field or is it to augment savings for the next school term’s expenses? Whatever the goals, identifying them and being honest about them can help find the job one will embrace for the summer break.
3. Attitude – A summer job is not just a means to avoid boredom. It can be a ticket to the greatest learning experiences that will shape the future. Accomplished and successful entrepreneurs, executives, business-owners and experts are great at visualizing their futures. When applying for that summer job in the local diner, for example, think of it as an apprenticeship to become the next Ray Kroc or Howard Schultz. No task will be too small or too insignificant when the mind and vision are set towards the future.
Finding a summer job is not as easy as it used to be but it is not as difficult as keeping them while making a significant mark at the place. Learning how to value the process and the people will help in making the most of one’s time, energy and resources. This could even be an important stepping-stone to a lifelong passion.
