How to Stretch Your Vacation Dollars to Get More

Vacations can be very expensive, from booking your flight tickets to gasoline expense for the long drives. Not to mention the costly reservation that you need to make for your accommodation and the extra budget you have to have for other expenses during your trip. While thinking about the possible expenses when budgeting for a trip, it is still possible to save money and not to spend as much on your next vacation.

Here are some tips to stretch your vacation dollars and still get more:

1. Plan your vacation. Traveling during the off peak season can save you money since accommodations are much cheaper during this time of the year. Research on the place you want to visit to check their low season so that you can plan on those months.

2. Take advantage of promotions. Hotels offer big discounts to travelers who book their accommodation in advance. You can book a nice room without paying for the full price. In order to save money, some travelers prefer to stay in a hostel since they are out sightseeing the whole day and just go to the hostel to sleep. Hostels are cheaper compared to hotels however you don’t get the privacy hotel offers since you will be sharing the room and bathrooms with other hostel guests.

3. Compare prices of flights and accommodations. Check out every promotion available so that you won’t miss out on special priced flight tickets or big discounts for your accommodation.

4. Bring food with you. Bring foods that don’t need to be heated or refrigerated like crackers, cheese, breads or fruits as you can munch on these instead of dining all the time in restaurants while on vacation. Another tip on saving on dining expenses while on vacation is to dine in restaurants away from the tourist spots as these restaurants are much more expensive. Instead, eat in restaurants where the locals dine and enjoy their native cuisines.

5. Instead of taking a cab to go to a certain place, you can save money by using public transportation like subways or trains in order to reach your destination. It will give you a feel of how the locals live. If the place that you want to see is somewhat near, it is best to walk so that you can get your daily dose of work out and at the same time save money.

6. Shopping for souvenirs can likewise be expensive, make sure that you research ahead of time the best and cheapest place where you can shop for souvenir items. The skill of haggling is very helpful when shopping at flea markets or bazaars as you can negotiate for the price of the item you want to buy.

Stretching your vacation dollars is easy just follow the tips given above and you can be sure to enjoy your vacation to the fullest without spending a fortune.

How to Create a Perfect Getaway with Girlfriends

Girls just want to have fun, and you know it. It doesn’t matter what age range you are in. Bottom line is you will always crave for that getaway with no one else but you and your girlfriends.

1. Plan it, imagine it, book it
Get your girlfriends to sit down for lunch or dinner and narrow down a list of things for you to do on your getaway. Talk about activities, interests, and locations. Most inns, hotels and resorts have group packages on special holidays that you might want to avail. Otherwise, if you’re on a tight budget, you may borrow (or rent) a quaint cottage in the rural areas, the woods, or the mountains. During the day, you may want to go out for a hike or a picnic, and when night falls, set up a bonfire and make s’mores. You are never too old for s’mores.

2. Invite a friend who plays hard to get
Chances are these are the ones who are in dire need of a vacation from work, home, and school. Invite them, and make sure that they come prepared with plenty of stories and guilty pleasures. It will be fun to have plenty of friends over, but keep it at a small number to maintain the sentimentality and intimacy of the getaway. You wouldn’t want to feel like you’re hosting a party, would you?

3. Prepare for the trip
Road trips are the preference since the long drive makes the getaway more exciting. You will get to experience the view from the ground and have plenty of time to rock to tunes on the radio. Be sure to pack snacks and drinks for a long drive or a picnic stopover. They should be easy to eat and pack up. If you’re taking a plane to your destination, make sure to book seats that are beside each other so you can still talk during the flight. Oh, and don’t forget the camera.

4. Relive your childhood slumber parties
Bring out the magazines, the makeup, the nail polish, and the romantic comedies. Gather all the chips, cookies, and chocolates and place them on a table that’s within reach, then eat to your heart’s desire. Remember how when you were young, you’d pull all-nighters with your gal pals? Now is the time to do it again. You’re not getting any younger, so why not relive your youth. Don’t worry about that extra pound. It is, after all, worth it.

5. Be flexible
Nothing can be more annoying than a friend who always complains when plans don’t go as desired. Remember Murphy’s Law? It happens all the time. The best thing you can do for yourself and for your friends is to plan everything months beforehand. This includes the location, the things to bring, the people to invite, and the activities to do. Always have alternatives at hand. For example, if your sister can’t lend you her cabin for the weekend, look for an inn. If it rains during a hike, have a race and whoever gets back to the cabin first, gets breakfast in bed. Thinking out of the box will ensure that you and your girlfriends will have a memorable getaway despite the unexpected circumstances that might come your way.

It’s quite a difficult task to get friends together once they start having busy schedules and families to take care of. Nevertheless, we all deserve a break once in a while, right? What better way is there than to have a vacation away from the world with friends who deserve it as much as you do?

Planning an all-girls getaway might be hard at first, but once it becomes a tradition for your group, it will be a good habit that’s going to be difficult to break. So go ahead, treat yourself and your friends to a well-deserved getaway.

Simple Tips to Plan Kid’s Birthday on a Dime!

Hosting a children’s party is totally exciting and fun. Since the celebrant and the main guests are children, throwing all the colors, shapes and jolly themes all over the venue is a sure extravagant idea. But after the games and party itself, the venue will end up swimming in mess and the thought of spending too much for that party seemed to be exaggerated. Celebrate a kid’s party without taking out too much money out of your pocket. Get a pick of some of the following ideas and your child will surely have a wonderful and fun party and you will save more than you expect.

1. Allot for a party budget. Before giving the party a shopping extravaganza, decide first how much money you will be spending for it. List down the amount that you will be spending for the cake, party favors, decorations and party foods. After doing the math, do the shopping and stick to that list. There might be some differences but it should not go too much overboard the budget you have.

2. Have a shape themed party. Among all the shapes, the circle is the easiest to pick. There are a lot of things that can be associated with circle in every kid’s party. No one ever goes wrong with balloons. Choose balloons of various colors to add life to the party place. You can also prepare donuts, cupcakes, round birthday cake, gum balls and other round food and snacks that children love. Do not spend too much on decorations. If you really want a practical birthday bash, focus on the things that children will enjoy. The decoration is less likely to catch their eye. Be very minimal yet colorful and fun.

3. Spend less for games and fun. When you visit a party shop to get some items you need, they might allure you of hiring clowns or magicians. Children enjoy watching these people perform and do tricks in front of them but after a while they will still find a way to have fun themselves. After all, the clown is sure to end his show after a few performances anyway. If you want to keep the little guests preoccupied with having fun, instead of hiring a clown, set up an activity or play area for them in the backyard. Once they arrive they can directly throw themselves into the play zone and when they get tired of laughing and chasing each other they will surely enjoy the simple snacks you have for them.

4. Don’t skip the games without prizes. Even if you are spending less for the party, don’t miss the prizes that you have to give the children for the games. The prizes don’t have to be expensive toys. There are a lot local of party supplies that have inexpensive toys for the kids. Sometimes art materials are better option. They may be cheaper but children can really have fun doing art activities themselves. In the party supplies stores you will also find good deals for party favors. Get a few prizes for the games that you have for your child’s party.

Throwing a birthday party for children does not have to be all out expensive. You can save some of the money for his clothes instead. Children are not choosy when it comes to how they are going to be happy and alive during the party. Just grab the right music, food, decorations and party favors and the children will surely have an exciting day without spending too much.

Budget-Friendly Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for Her

It’s February and you all know what it means. Valentine’s Day is closing in. For some people, V-day is one of those occasions where a big budget comes in handy. This may be true (we all know that diamonds are a girl’s best friend), but there are other more affordable and more sincere ways to make your lady feel special on this day of love.

1. Plan a Dinner for Two
Taking her to a romantic restaurant for dinner might have crossed your mind, but those kinds of restaurants are packed during this season. Before you sulk and tell yourself that you should have called in to reserve a table for two, think of it as an opportunity for you to show your lady that you can cook up a special meal for two. Do the groceries, plan the menu, and set the table. Flowers and candles would make a nice touch, too. You, the budding chef, will definitely deserve that kiss.

2. Give Her Toys and Treats for Her Pets
If your partner is an animal lover, then chances are she has a pet living with her. This Valentine’s Day, show her that you care not just about her, but also for her pets. She will appreciate your small act of sincerity in including her furry friends into your life.

3. Do Something She’s Passionate About
If she’s into theater, buy her tickets to see the next play in your town with you. If she likes spending her time doing charity work, schedule an activity at a non-profit that she’s not involved in. It will surprise her that you’ve taken her passion seriously.

4. Bring Her Back In Time
This one is going to be something fun for you. You can recreate special events in your relationship. Bring her back to the place you had your first date, do the same things you did before you got your first kiss as a couple, or take her back to you first said those three words. Women gush over events like these, and reliving the experience tells her that you treasure the memory as much as she does.

5. Make a Time Capsule
Collect pictures of you together and things that mean a lot in your relationship. Make it creative and worth looking forward to. This could be a spare key to each other’s place, the wrapper of the first gift she gave you, a list of things to do in the future, or a love letter to each other. Anything will do as long as it is something that means much to both of you. This is a great annual activity for couples who are in it for the long run because it will always make you look forward to opening that time capsule together every year.

6. Alternatively, Make a Scrapbook
Another way to keep your memories alive is to make a yearly scrapbook on Valentine’s Day. Collect pictures taken of you together in the past year and place them in a scrapbook. This is a more personal experience of keeping memories rather than sticking them in an album or placing them in an online album.

7. Give Her A Spa Treatment At Home
Surprise her by turning her bedroom into a spa getaway. Sprinkle rose petals on the floor, light scented candles, and play soothing music. Take her to bed, put some massage oil, make her lie on her back, and start massaging her. She might have come home tired from work, and a massage will definitely be a warm welcome home on Valentine’s Day.

8. Take a Short Nature Trip
It could be as simple as having a picnic in the park or as adventurous as hiking in the nearest mountain or woods. The peace and quiet of nature will reinvigorate your senses, and the alone time that you both have will definitely make up for the mosquito bites. Make sure to bring sunscreen and insect repellent.

9. Write To Each Other
The joy of receiving mail is slowly becoming a rarity with the popularity of emails and Facebook. Write to your lady a day or two before Valentine’s Day (whichever date is fine as long as it gets to arrive at her place on the 14th) and mail it to her. She’ll be thrilled seeing a love letter in the midst of a pile of bills and subscription magazines. Even if you have plans on going out that day, it’ll be a little parting gift once she arrives home.

10. Give Her A Treat Basket
If you’ve been dating her for quite some time, then you’ll probably know what her favorite snacks are. Collect all of them- chocolates, potato chips, biscuits, cookies, candies, and whatever else she fancies- and put them in a basket. Tie a ribbon, insert a thoughtful letter, and deliver it personally right to her doorstep. Bring plenty movies with you as well. With all the consumer hype that’s going around on Valentine’s Day, it will be a comforting experience to spend it like a lazy day at home (with special treats, of course).

People say that you should treat your partner like it’s Valentine’s Day everyday. However, this somehow makes the occasion loose its special appeal. While it is good to demonstrate your love for each other everyday, it’s always better to have that special time of the year to celebrate the love you share. Valentine’s Day is just that. Keep in mind that while ladies like to be spoiled and pampered, all they really want is to be appreciated and treated in a special way. You may not spend that much for her gift, but as they say, it’s the thought that counts.

Ordinary shoes like plain rubber shoes, high heel shoes, sandals and slippers are not enough to protect and comfort your feet from extreme coldness. Boots are the best and most suitable footgear during winter. Aside from pants and leggings, boots can help add warmth on your legs. Here are some useful tips to consider and to help you find the right winter boots.

* Work on Your Budget
The first thing to consider before buying winter boots is your budget. Boots are not meant for daily use during non-winter season. It is only used occasionally, so spending a lot of money for a pair of boots only is not ideal or impractical. Determining your fixed budget first of all is the initial thing to consider before shopping for your boots.

* What is your Reason?
Second is to identify what is the purpose of the boots. Consider the activities wherein you will use this boots. Are you going to use this for outdoor activities like skiing, hiking, riding, or hunting? Or are you going to use this around the city or town only-like going to school, office, or working place daily? If the boots are intended for great outdoor activities, it is more advisable to choose a fleece-lined and waterproof boots to keep you warm and to protect your legs from possible injuries you may encounter on such activities. Think also of the comfort of your feet. You may choose boots made of soft fabric inside to provide cushioning to your feet. Consider also the terrain of your walking paths. Boots with spikes on the sole are suggested for snowy or slippery paths to prevent you from slipping down. Spikes on the soles of the boots will grip on slippery and wet surfaces to prevent your feet from sliding.

* The Style
It is also necessary to consider the style of the boots. Knee high or thigh high boots are suitable for long-legged women. Take also into consideration that your boots matches your outfit. If you are to use it on daily office works, it is better to choose neutral colors like black or brown. These colors can be easily matched on any wardrobe. For men wearing fitted jeans, it looks nice to wear boots over your pants. For women who are under height, there are high heeled boots designed for winter season.

* What is your Size?
Above all the fashion, style, and budget factors, make sure your chosen size fits you. It would only be a waste of money if you won’t be able to use it comfortably. Try to fit it with or without socks. Make sure there is enough space for your toes to the chaffing of your feet.

Considering all the above tips will help you decide which winter boots to buy for yourself. You won’t get out of fashion yet you get the right boots for you practically and ideally.

Tips to Find the Right Running Shoes for Men

Running is not simply doing those strides in a quick manner. It is more than a simple activity. For the enthusiasts, running is a passion that never falls below the line of a hobby. When you are so inclined to your hobby, doing it gives out the most passionate reflection of you whenever you are into it. With running, the simplest way of being passionate about it is by providing yourself the rightful outfit and gears that help bring out the best runner in you. Basically, men should be wearing the right running shoes to better kick off the track. Here are some useful tips on finding the right running shoes for men.

1. Check for your foot type

The best way to do this is to do the wet test. You only have to slightly wet the bottom of one of your foot and step it on a piece of paper. After a few seconds, get off and trace the created outline of your foot. Now you can determine whether you have a normal, low or high arch. This is also called the pronation of your foot.

* A neutral pronation or that with the normal arch will show a band in the middle having half the size of the width of your foot. The band is the one that connects your toes to your heel. With this foot arch the best shoes to choose is the stability running shoes.

* An overpronated foot or a flat foot is the one that is measured with the low arch. You would know this if the imprint after the wet test shows almost the whole of your foot. Take the motion control running shoes if you have this foot.

* Underpronated foot or the one with the high arch is determined if the outline of your foot shows a sharp curve and there is only a very thin band that connects the toes and the heel. The cushioned running shoes are best for this foot type.

2. Know your shoe type

After determining what kind of foot you have, it is now time for checking what kind of shoes will best fit you.

* A foot with a neutral pronation should choose stability running shoes. These are the type of shoes that has a semi-curved shape. This type of shoe gives just the right amount of cushioning and support to the foot. It does not control motion that much but only has the durability that would last long enough for the normally arched foot.
* For the flat foot or the overpronated foot, a running shoe with a straight shape should provide a maximum support while running. Its cushioning gives the best control to the foot and is known to be the most rigid of all kinds of running shoes.

* The underpronated foot must be supported with the curved shape running shoes. It is designed to absorb the shock produced by running. Among the running shoes, this one has a mid sole that is the softest and a curved shape to promote foot motion.

Running is a sport that keeps the body healthy. It is important to wear the correct running shoes in order to give the rightful amount of support when you do the activity. Now that you have an idea about the types of foot and the best type of running shoes for you, it will be easier to shop for the one that would give you the right fit and the right support.

Top 10 Moving Mistakes to Avoid

Moving to a different city or state is a very stressful event for anyone. In order to become successful with your transfer, you need to plan and prepare before the actual date of move. Throwing everything in a box and automatically deciding to move will not assure you of a smooth transfer. Here are 10 things that you need to avoid when moving to a different place.

1. Not planning ahead. Planning the exact date and time of the move will particularly help you ease the transfer process. Not only are you prepared, you get to give yourself some proper pacing instead of hurrying and panicking in the process.

2. Contacting only 1 moving company. Perhaps you may have missed it, there are more than one moving company in your area that you may hire. Neglecting this information might result to you hiring an expensive company who charges double than the other moving services you did not contact. Take time in doing research and require written quotes from different moving companies so that you will have options.

3. Contacting the movers, a little too late. Moving services should be contacted months before the actual transfer date. More often than not, moving vans or services charge higher if you contact them days before you move. Therefore, to save on this particular aspect, contact and make arrangements with the moving services in your area.

4. Fragile items, unwrapped. Forgetting to bubble wrap your expensive china will cost you so much when it gets to your new property in pieces. You may purchase boxes that are used specifically for fragile items. If you are on a tight budget, you may use old newspapers and magazines to wrap the vases and figurines securely. Do not forget to label the boxes with: “FRAGILE”, “HANDLE W/ CARE”, and “DO NOT DROP”. This way, the movers are aware that these boxes have breakable items and therefore, extra care will be given.

5. Researching too little or none at all about the new place. One of the worst mistakes that you can do is to forget or neglect doing research on your new city or state. You need to at least know a couple of important details regarding the new area. The advent of technology these days will make it easier for you to do research, so make Google your bestfriend.

6. Imperfect timing, weather wise. Moving during a very cold season might not be the best date to choose. Therefore, research on the climate of the new place before finalizing the transfer date.

7. Taking time for granted. Thinking that you have a lot of time is one of the most dangerous things that you can do. More often than not, when you transfer, time is never on your side. Therefore, never let your guard down and continue with your check list until the day of the move.

8. Not leaving new contact details. Before you leave, inform significant others about your move and leave them your new home address, telephone number, office number, and mobile number. Be practical, moving to a different place that you know little or nothing about is scary. Leaving them with contact details will assure both you and your family that they can get hold of you anytime.

9. Not being organized. Being organized is one of the key to making a move successful. Create a checklist of the things that you need to accomplish, people that needs to be called, information that needs to be researched on, and more. This way, you will be less stressed plus you are not prone to forgetting things and paying extra in the process.

10. No insurance for important items. Taking that extra mile to apply for insurance for items that are important, fragile, and breakable will save you loads of cash. Moving companies will assure that your items are kept safe however, there are circumstances that we have no control over. Placing insurance on your most valuable items such as your 40-inch flat LED TV will provide you that extra assurance and peace of mind.

Those are the 10 mistakes that you should avoid when moving to a different town, city, or state. Some of them might be minor but taking care of them will surely make a difference with your transfer experience. Make sure to think long and hard about the details of your move and contact the necessary people who will assist you. Making certain that everything flows freely will not only save you tons of cash but also give you peace of mind.

This article will share tips on how to save on holiday travel expenses.

1. Find packaged deals. Packaged deals offer reasonable rates which is why it is becoming very popular. Constantly check “all inclusive” packages from your favorite hotel and you might be surprise of how much you can save through this option. Travel agencies would probably be able to assist you with finding all inclusive packages because more often than not, these agencies have access to unpublished rates and promos.

2. Travel light. To avoid paying extra, make sure to travel within the limited baggage weight allocated for each passenger. This can be done by planning in advance especially with what items you need and what clothes to bring. This is a constant struggle for parents who are traveling with kids because children are difficult to pack for. Negotiate with your child not to bring her favorite stuffed animal or a lot of toys. Try to explain the situation to the child and help her decide which toy she or he should bring.

There are hotel chains or holiday inns that doesn’t charge any for kids who stays with their parents. Of course, if your kids are older and would want a room of their own, definitely you need to pay for those. For very young children, most hotel chains will not charge additional fees for them. There are also added perks such as free meals and free water rides for children. These are some of the things that you might want to consider before booking your holiday get-away.

Weeks before the intended travel, check out restaurants and hotels in that area which has discount coupons available online. You may sign up for these sites and get some good discounts which you could enjoy when you arrive at the place. Coupons really make life a little bit less expensive for a lot of people.

If you and your family decide to travel using a car rental system, make sure that you ask or read certain details that has something to do with payment and fees. There is always an off chance that these car rentals would let you pay for fees that you aren’t aware of, in the first place. This isn’t the time of year to be taken advantage of. Ask about the charges such as sales tax, vehicle license fee and such and ask if is it necessary for you to shoulder such fees.

Traveling or spending the holidays far from home can be exciting and fun, but at the same time, expensive. Hopefully this article will help you in finding ways to limit or decrease the cost of your flight and accommodation so you and your family could enjoy without paying too much. Useful Travel Tips for the Holiday

Traveling especially during the holiday season is an exciting activity. It may be quite expensive but the experience and memories you will encounter is priceless. Whether you are backpacking or simply going to visit family and friends, it is essential to keep in mind the simple things to make your trip a breeze.

Early Booking. It is best to plan your vacation months ahead. Most often, travel agencies are giving big discounts in flights and hotel accommodations if the booking is done several months ahead.

Head to the airport early. Try your best to spare extra hours before your flight schedule. This is to make sure that you won’t miss your flight even you encounter some minor delays.

Pack wisely. If you are planning to spend just 2-3 days of vacation, do not bring your whole closet with you. Bring enough clothes plus a little extra so that you won’t need to bring big luggage.

Dress simply. Airport security includes body screening. You may want to consider dressing simply by not wearing too much jewelries, big metal buckled belts or hard to remove shoes.

Know the prohibited items in the plane. Local and international flights allow only a minimum amount of liquid you can carry on board. Make sure that you bring only what is allowed and keep them all together in a ziploc bag.

Check for flexible flights with the travel agency. When booking your flight, check with the travel agency if they have flexible flights. Just in case you need to move yours, you will not have any hassles at all.

Don’t wrap your gifts. Airline securities subject everyone to baggage checks. If you are bringing gifts with you, it is recommended that you bring them unwrapped for security checks and wrap them only when you arrive at your destination.

Plan early if you are renting a car in the destination. Sometimes the rush decision of renting a car will only cost you more. If you plan to rent a car from your destination, plan ahead in order for you to have enough time comparing prices, location and services offered.

Make copies of your important documents. In cases when you are bringing important documents with you, take also a copy and keep it in a different bag. This is to make sure that you will still have a copy if the original gets lost.

Keep these simple tips in mind when you’re planning for your holiday trip. Just remember that now matter how your travel experience turns out, you’ll be with your loved ones during this special occasion.

As Christmas is fast approaching, everyone is in a daze looking for ways to spend a little less for gifts this year. Aside from the festivities of the season, its arrival almost always dictates shelving out hundreds of dollars for gifts alone. Here are some tips to help you save money on Christmas gifts this year.

1. Buy Gift Cards. Gift cards are the most hassle-free gifts you can ever give to your loved ones. A gift card for groceries or fuel would really be appreciated by the entire family.

2. Baked Goods. Cookies and baked items are very festive and appropriate for the Christmas season. If you have any hidden talents with baking, this is the perfect time to bring them out and whip up a good batch of cupcakes or cookies. Kids and even their parents really love homemade goodies, it makes them appreciate the effort you put in making their gifts.

3. Invest on a good dinner instead. Suggest to your relatives and loved ones that instead of spending money on expensive gifts, why not spend the holidays together over dinner. That way, you get to talk and catch up, plus you save a lot of money for not buying individual gifts. You can place a few inexpensive gifts on dinner plates just to be in the spirit of gift giving.

4. Encourage donating toys for Christmas. Donating to charity is one of the best ways to spend the holidays, try to impart this idea to your family and their positive reaction may take you by surprise. Convince them that there are kids who needs these gifts more than you do. Not only will you save money, you will also have one of the most memorable Christmas in your life.

5. Promote exchange gift giving this holiday. Instead of buying gifts for each of your family or friends, introduce the idea of exchanging gifts instead. This not only helps you save a lot of money, but it is also a very fun way to give and receive gifts this Christmas. You may want to make it unique and more exciting by having them pick out the name, right before the actual exchange happens.

6. Use discounts coupons. You may have accumulated a lot of discount cards or coupons from previous purchases, and this is the perfect time to use them. This will help you save a lot of money while buying your niece’s most wanted toy or your Grandfather’s favorite wine.

7. Check your neighbor’s yard sale. The saying that goes: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” is perfect for this occasion and for saving money as well. Your neighbor might have your Uncle’s baseball card collection must-have’s or a barely used basketball. Used items are sold at very low prices which will help you save money to even buy a gift for yourself.

8. Buy items from dollar stores. Stores that sells items for a dollar or two should be your first priority when you start shopping for Christmas gifts. Some of these stores offer a lot of good and quality toys, cosmetics, home-wares, and more at very low prices.

You have to remember that the season for giving does not necessarily mean, a season for expensive gifts. Gifts are just part of Christmas but they are not the sole purpose why we celebrate it. Spend your hard earned money wisely and enjoy your holidays with your loved ones and closest friends.

10 Ways to Stay in Shape During the Holidays

The holidays are fast approaching, and one of the best things about the holidays is the celebration. Some foods just aren’t appropriate for every day eating—eating turkey in the summer? That’s preposterous! But, the dilemma one faces with the rich holiday foods is how to stay in shape. We’ve got so much gusto when Thanksgiving and Halloween come around, but by New Year’s we’re all mopey and sad because we’ve got the ‘holiday weight’ on us. Some even despair so much that they devoid themselves of the celebratory feast! There are ways of eating healthy during the holiday rush.

If you’re one of those people, keep reading. As an advanced Christmas gift, here are 10 easy ways to stay in shape during the holidays without deprivation.

1. Kick down on the carbs!
When the holiday fest is laid out in front of you, I recommend you go for the proteins and stock up on vegetables. Not only is this healthier, but you don’t get that stuffed feeling after you eat. If you’re feeling low on energy, sure, go for the yams and the potatoes, but not too much.

2. Trimmings and Tidings
Another good tip here is to reduce the ‘trimmings’ you eat during your meal. This means going easy when adding butter, gravy or whipped cream.

3. Prep up!
One of the surprising ways to eat healthy during the holidays is not to skip out on your meals. When you’re heading out to a big party, munch on some fruit or egg on toast instead of skipping a meal. This helps you not to pig out during the party and keep you feeling great throughout the night. Don’t deprive yourself of the food you like! Enjoy the holidays while you can.

4. Be a snobbish eater
In the same vein, while you enjoy the food, try to go for the food you don’t eat everyday. Holiday foods are definitely a must, but you can avoid the everyday viands if you can. This is one of the times you can afford to be picky if you want to stay in shape.

5. Shape up!
Just because you’re on holiday doesn’t mean that you’re exercise is too. Although you don’t have to go to the gym if you don’t want to, make sure you’ve got your adequate amount of exercise—whether it be dancing, taking a walk or taking a nice bike ride around.

6. Be a kid!
If you find the scent of food to be way too tempting, go to the kids’ table and have some fun with them. Kids are more likely to do active things than adults. If this is your cup of tea, go ahead and organize a whole slew of activities for them and for everyone. Anything to keep your mind from the food table!

7. Alcohol or no?
Aside from being high in calories, reducing your alcoholic intake lessens the risk of having that embarrassing holiday photo taken. One way to do this is to alternate drinking alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (water is recommended!). You stay hydrated, but still have enough fun to celebrate.

8. Walk Away when you can
Once you’ve finished eating, no need to go for seconds—unless you really are still hungry. Take a moment to assess whether you do need another plate. Also, we suggest not hanging around the buffet table—too many chances for snacking.

9. Cooking for the party?
When hosting your own holiday party, a good way to cut calories is to use substitutions in your food. Your guests will forgive you if you use two egg whites instead of a whole egg, or when you use low-fat milk instead of the regular. They might never even notice it, if you do your substitutions well enough.

10. Celebrate!
One thing to remember during the holiday season is that you’re not here for the food, but to celebrate. Don’t be afraid to get everyone moving during the holidays, go out sledding or play games while at home. This is your time to have time with the people you love and celebrate with them another great year. In case you do splurge, don’t go crazy over it! Just eat and exercise as usual, and just try to be more careful in the next party. Happy Holidays!

Top Thanksgiving Activities for Kids

Thanksgiving has been a part of an American’s tradition for a long, long time. It is a time when the family all comes together and spends time with each other. Mom cooks the meal; dad and the children help out with the decorations. Everyone has activities to keep them busy before Thanksgiving dinner but what can the family do when all the decorations are set up but the turkey is not done yet? Here are some suggestions for a fun-filled Thanksgiving bonding activities parents and kids alike could enjoy:

Making your own place cards is not only an inexpensive way to make your guests know where they will sit but it is also an activity parents and children could bond over. Design your cards with usual Thanksgiving designs. Ask the children to decide where everyone else will sit. This will make them feel that they’re an essential part of the Thanksgiving dinner and will enhance their decision-making skills.

Your family could also make your own centerpiece for a more personal touch to your Thanksgiving dinner. A colorful turkey, a huge pilgrim hat, an Indian headpiece, whatever your decision might be, include the children in making the centerpiece. You could also allow your kid to put the centerpiece right before you set up the table for dinner.

You could also make your own napkin rings. You could pick up colorful yarns from the crafts store and ask the children to pick out which colors are most appropriate to Thanksgiving. Browns, oranges and yellows are some of the colors you could use for your napkin rings. Ask them to glue the ends to make the ring and when it dries up, you could insert the napkins in them.

You could also ask the children to make a Thanksgiving tree. Barbecue sticks will make a good Thanksgiving tree. You could also ask them to cut out turkey or pilgrim hat-shaped papers and tie yarns on them so they could write the things they are thankful for on these papers and they could put it on their Thanksgiving tree. Assisting the children in handling the sticks and the scissors is advised to ensure safety.

Thanksgiving murals and tablecloth are also a fun way to bond with your children. Instead of your usual, fancy tablecloths, buy plain white ones and grab fabric markers from the crafts store. For the mural, illustration boards and permanent markers will do the trick. Same as the Thanksgiving tree, ask the children to write and/or draw the things they are thankful for on the mural and the table cloth.

There are other ways to bond over Thanksgiving activities. It doesn’t matter if it’s a big activity or a small one. What’s important is you and your children are having fun. Thanksgiving is all about happiness, anyway.

Christmas Gifts You Can Start Making Now

The month of December is fast approaching. Therefore, Christmas day is just few days from now. Many of us have started the countdown, hanging around eagerly for that day to come. Although we can commemorate the real meaning and essence of Christmas every day, it is still a wonderful opportunity to make sense with it on the traditional month/day it is usually celebrated. During December, we habitually share our blessings to our loved ones and to needy people by giving gifts and presents in terms of Christmas cards and messages, money, stuffs and other material things as a sign of our affection to them without expecting any other return.

Now that Christmas time is less than 2 months away, we should start thinking of what kind of gifts we should give to our loved ones. It’s better to give than to receive especially this season. Do not hesitate to let others take pleasure with the good things we have.

Here are some ideas for Christmas gifts you can start making now.

  • You can make an item for them to be used as knickknack storage.
  • If you want to give a sort of an artistic photo, you may have it outlined, sketched or painted. You can also create a scrapbook full of memories created between you and the gift recipient.
  • Personal baked goods are also pleasant to offer. They might enjoy them more often than purchased one.
  • You can also produce slides of pictures, videos or a collection of music burned in a blank CD or DVD.
  • You may also give sewed garment, crocheted yarn or embroidered piece of cloth.
  • Collect your personal favorite recipes and create a cooking book designed with them on mind.
  • Another simplest thing you can do is to make Christmas card with personal inspirational messages on it.
  • You can also give donations in honor of them to underprivileged men, women and kids.

These gift giving ideas maybe cheap but nothing expresses more Christmas spirit than the thought behind each gift. What matters most is the value of giving heartily these stuffs offer to them.
