Thanksgiving has been a part of an American’s tradition for a long, long time. It is a time when the family all comes together and spends time with each other. Mom cooks the meal; dad and the children help out with the decorations. Everyone has activities to keep them busy before Thanksgiving dinner but what can the family do when all the decorations are set up but the turkey is not done yet? Here are some suggestions for a fun-filled Thanksgiving bonding activities parents and kids alike could enjoy:

Making your own place cards is not only an inexpensive way to make your guests know where they will sit but it is also an activity parents and children could bond over. Design your cards with usual Thanksgiving designs. Ask the children to decide where everyone else will sit. This will make them feel that they’re an essential part of the Thanksgiving dinner and will enhance their decision-making skills.

Your family could also make your own centerpiece for a more personal touch to your Thanksgiving dinner. A colorful turkey, a huge pilgrim hat, an Indian headpiece, whatever your decision might be, include the children in making the centerpiece. You could also allow your kid to put the centerpiece right before you set up the table for dinner.

You could also make your own napkin rings. You could pick up colorful yarns from the crafts store and ask the children to pick out which colors are most appropriate to Thanksgiving. Browns, oranges and yellows are some of the colors you could use for your napkin rings. Ask them to glue the ends to make the ring and when it dries up, you could insert the napkins in them.

For the mural, illustration boards and permanent markers will do the trick. Same as the Thanksgiving tree, ask the children to write and/or draw the things they are thankful for on the mural and the table cloth.

  1. Bake your own cake. There are recipes both online and on books for cakes. For a safer option, choose a chocolate recipe. Designing the cake will be easy. You can ask your child to help you with putting the icing and small toys on the cake. You can also bake mini cupcakes to replace the traditional birthday cake. Pizzas are also nice alternatives to cakes.
  2. Balloons are easy to find. You can buy inflatable balloons at the party favors store near you (they are cheaper than getting inflated balloons) and inflate them yourselves. You can also ask your kid to help you with the balloons for the ultimate bonding experience.
